UXH Mixology #23: Color color what color?
In this edition: Some Jugaad, a color controversy and the festival of colors đ¨
Hello!
An infamous comic once said:
Love him or hate him, there is no doubt that nowhere can you find so much content, so frequently.
I mean the whole Zomato controversy from last week, is a classic example. And yes, there are some design and research lessons tooâŚ
đ Product & Design News:
Zomato axes colour-coded veg fleet day after launch amid row: Explained
So it started with Deepinder Goyalâs tweet introducing a new âPure Vegâ mode at Zomato, where itâs not just a filter in the app, but also would have a dedicated fleet that would serve âpure vegâ food.
At first, one would say: nice move! Since there are so many people who stay away from ordering online due to concerns on not just hygiene, but also on non-veg kitchens being used to serve veg food.
But things unravelled rather quickly, online, due to one big miss from Zomato: color.
For reasons we will never know, Zomato felt that this âPure Vegâ fleet would be all green vs Zomatoâs traditional Red. And this leads to a whole host of issues: targeting of Zomato riders being the primary one (those who are not green).
Despite trying to stick to their original plan, Zomato quickly realised, it was not a battle worth fighting and now has gone back on the color differentiation (the veg option remains)
Whatâs interesting in this saga is that no one at Zomato ever felt, prior to launch, that this color coding would lead to issues, nor did their research (maybe they never asked about the color change).
Supposedly, it took them a 20hr Zoom call, after the controversy, to realise and fix this: wonder what they were debating for this long.

The wrong kind of âJugaadâ
Alok Kejriwal (CEO, of Games2Win) often posts pearls of wisdom on entrepreneurship & businesses.
His recent post caught our attention in terms of how to spot opportunities.
Post summary:
So, if you live in any tier-1 city in India, you would often notice a lack of options for crossing the road (especially when itâs a highway in the outskirts).
Something similar is also prevalent in Bangladesh. An entrepreneur noticed it and found a simple solution to it :)
The only issue, it was not legal.
However, the takeaway w.r.t Product & Design is profound. Check the detailed post here.

What Akshay is celebrating: Holi!
It is the festival of colors but over the years, for me, the way to celebrate Holi has changed a lot. As kids, we loved playing with colors, water balloons and ofcourse pickharis.
But now, the festival has become less of that and more of understanding the significance of Holika, Holi and onset of Spring, greeting friends and ofcourse, enjoying thandai and gujiyas (which is a personal favorite)
Infact, in Mumbai, Maladâs MM Mithaiwala is famous for its gujiyas, amongst others. A must try if you happen to be here, as also the lassi.
So thatâs a lot of color talk for a week: what did you make of the Zomato saga?
Was there something they could have done differently? Tell us what you think, by replying to this mail. Weâd love to hear your thoughts.
Finally, hereâs wishing you a very very Happy Holi!
